Picnic tables and the yard…

We asked visitors what they wanted at Campsie Glen a couple of years ago, and tables came out at the top of the list. For example, folk would bring their elderly parents up and would sit in the car to look at the view, rather than getting out into the fresh air. A table with seats is needed for this – so that those who have difficulty standing for a long time can really enjoy the view in full.

So we levelled a couple of small areas, and designed and made up a couple of picnic tables (this one needs the final bench)..

For a while, they were quite unmolested, but unfortunately some folk used portable BBQs on the top surface, leaving big burns – and once something looks damaged, it seems to become a free-for-all for dismantling.

Arriving today at the site – the situation has got extreme!! Leaving a burn mark is one thing – but having a full-on fire on the table top is something else…

The damage looks worse than it is, however – and amazingly (to us), we have still seen folk sitting at them, even in the pouring rain! It’s good to see them being used, and they obviously are much needed.

Now that we have the works yard in place, it didn’t take too long to get the top repaired. This is how we left it today:

We’re in the process of creating some metal plates for the top sides, so that folk can safely put BBQs on the table.

The seats on this table still need work – we’ll aim to do that in the next week or two – and we’ll update this post when we’ve done them. Note that the table right next to the exit from the car park has a seat gap specifically for wheelchair users.

If there are other facilities you’d like to see at the car park, or elsewhere in Campsie Glen Woodland, please let us know.
